Diamond Princess crisis – Two passengers die of coronavirus

A THIRD Queenslander evacuated to Darwin after being on the coronavirus-stricken cruise ship, Diamond Princess, has tested positive to COVID-19.

She’s expected to be flown from the Northern Territory to Brisbane on Sunday for treatment.

The latest case, a 57-year-old woman, is one of seven Australians who have been diagnosed with the new virus since arriving into Darwin from Japan, where they had been in quarantine on the Diamond Princess.

Hundreds of people on the ship have tested positive to the novel coronavirus, the biggest outbreak outside of China.

Two Queensland women, aged 54 and 55, were flown from Darwin to Brisbane on a Lifeflight charter tonight and taken to the Prince Charles Hospital.

A husband of one of the women, who so far remains free of COVID-19, flew with them.

“On compassionate and medical grounds, it just makes sense for us to keep him close to his wife and hospital if his condition changes,” Queensland Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young said.

She said both women in the Prince Charles Hospital were in a stable condition.

“They’re now in isolation at the hospital’s infectious diseases unit,”Dr Young said.

“This specialised facility is exactly where these patients should be right now. They’re in safe hands.”

Dr Young repeated calls to people if they had returned from China in the past 14 days to see a doctor if they were unwell and to call the doctor’s surgery or hospital emergency department ahead of time to let them know they may have COVID-19.

More than 77,000 people have been infected with COVID-19, which emerged in China in December. The virus has killed more than 2300 people.

Australia has had 22 cases so far.
