The Veronicas kicked off Qantas flight to Brisbane

Federal police have booted pop sisters The Veronicas off a Sydney to Brisbane flight after an argument broke out between the duo and cabin crew. But the singers say they have no idea what they did wrong, calling the incident “upsetting”.

BRISBANE pop duo The Veronicas were booted off a flight and dubbed “a security risk” for allegedly refusing to follow the instructions of the cabin crew, delaying the plane’s departure by almost an hour.

Twin sisters Lisa and Jessica Origliasso were escorted off the Brisbane-bound Qantas flight, which was scheduled to depart Sydney at 10am Sunday, after they allegedly refused to place their luggage in the overhead bin and became disruptive.

Posting from the band’s official Instagram account last night, the duo wrote they were confused by the “upsetting and embarrassing” encounter.

They said they had placed their bags in the overhead compartment with the help of another passenger after being asked to do so and told by the attendant she couldn’t assist as it was against company policy. They said “right before take off” the flight attendant brought a manager over, who “lectured” them about company policy. “At that point they refused to give us their names, and announced they were going to call security on us. We had no idea why. That’s when we started filming,” they wrote.

In a statement on Sunday night, The Veronicas said: “The incident was escalated without explanation why from cabin staff” and “we co-operated with all requests from authorities and exited the aircraft”.

One agitated passenger, who wanted to only be known as Greg, said he overheard cabin crew becoming increasingly frustrated with the pair.

“They (The Veronicas) were just ... belligerent,” Greg told The Courier-Mail.

Greg said he recognised The Veronicas, who performed and spoke at Tony Robbins’ event at Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena on Saturday, when they walked past him in the aisle.

“They’re not stars, they’re C-graders. I recognised them because my daughter liked them, but everyone else was just going ‘what the hell?’,” he said. As time passed, Greg said he and other passengers became impatient.

“They were just being obstructive and not following instructions,” he said.

“The plane was getting pretty agitated.”

Greg, who was seated in business class, said he overheard the cabin crew openly discussing removing them from the flight.

The ordeal finally came to an end when the captain made an announcement, labelling the pair a “security risk” and confirming they would be removed by the Australian Federal Police.

“They got marched out, and one ... was filming the whole thing,” Greg said.

Others took to social media to confirm the incident, with one Twitter user saying the pair “legit got kicked off a plane because they refused to put their bags up”.

However, others on social media have defended the pair, with one offering to provide a statement.

One person replied to an Instragram post saying the decision to booat the pair off the flight was an “over-reaction”.

“I was sitting right in front of you girls and believe the whole situation was an overreaction on Qantas’ part,” the comment said.

“Had they explained the reason why they cannot touch your bags would have provided you girls with answers you politely asked for.

“The flight attendant blew this up more than needed and you guys got the raw end of the stick.”

In a statement, Qantas confirmed that flight QF516, which had been scheduled to leave at 10am from Sydney Airport, was delayed due to an incident aboard the plane.

“After boarding, two passengers refused to follow crew instructions and were offloaded,” it said.

They were allowed to travel to Brisbane on a later flight. Sydney Airport’s website states the flight left 40 minutes late.

The sisters, who denied any wrongdoing, said the incident was “incredibly intimidating and confusing”.

No further action was taken by police.
