A swimmer has been treated by paramedics on Surfers Paradise beach as treacherous surf that saw a string of rescues on Australia Day continues.
The person was pulled from the water at Clifford St about 11.30am and paramedics were on the scene.
Queensland Ambulance Service operations supervisor David Morgan said the swimmer was “incredibly lucky” after being pulled from the water unconscious and not breathing.
Mr Morgan said the man had been submerged for about 30 seconds after diving under a wave before being rescued by lifeguards.
They gave him CPR for about two minutes before he regained consciousness.
He was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
“He’s an incredibly lucky individual,” Mr Morgan said.
“It’s great that he was swimming between the flags and he was with his mates, and they were able to raise help fairly quickly.”
Two people were taken to hospital – one in a critical condition – in two of about 50 rescues on Australia Day.
They included two mass rescues of seven people each at Tallebudgera and Kurrawa.
