A fishing trawler has somehow drifted close to a popular Sunshine Coast beach at the weekend - with authorities saying it made for “an interesting afternoon”.
Mooloolaba Coast Guard was alerted via radio when a fishing trawler somehow drifted too close to Mooloolaba Beach about 1pm on Saturday, December 16.
The popular Sunshine Coast beach was busy and buzzing with activity over the second weekend of school summer holidays - as locals and tourists flocked to the ocean to cool down.
Mooloolaba Coast Guard spokesman Kym Rogerson said they were alerted to the out-of-place trawler about 1pm while enjoying their lunch.
“We tried to contact them via radio but couldn’t get a response,” Mr Rogerson said.
“Our White Saturday crew quickly headed out on Mooloolaba Rescue to find the trawler with its bow on the beach ... it was only 50 metres from the beach with the bow wedged in the sand.
“Our crew asked the Surf Lifesavers to take our heavy towline to the trawler and have it connected to its stern. Then with full power on our two 500 horsepower Cummins diesels and with the trawler engaging astern power, it was successfully towed into deeper water, where it made its way to a safe anchorage.
“Two hours later we were asked to take a hydraulics mechanic to the trawler to effect repairs. So our 8.5m Secondary Rescue Vessel, with Stephen Ring as Master, took the mechanic to the trawler and offloaded him and his equipment.
“We’re not sure of the exact fault or how long repairs will take, but it certainly was an interesting afternoon for our crews, with another vessel saved from further damage.”

It was believed the prawn trawler had a mechanical problem - which was why it was drifting and dragging its anchor onto the shore.
Water Police were not involved.
Since the weekend a video of the drifting prawn trawler was posted to a popular Sunshine Coast Instagram page with the comical caption “can’t fish there mate”.
