Police have released the name of the 50-year-old truck driver who died after his truck rolled about 12 kilometres north of Maleny last night.

He was Paul Gerard Joseph Robinson, 50, of Peachester.

Police said the man was driving a truck loaded with cattle feed and appeared to have experienced difficulty on a descent on the Maleny-Kenilworth Road.

It is believed the truck rolled onto the driver’s side and slid across the eastbound lane and through the guardrail before it came to rest in bushland.

Police said the man died at the scene as firefighters and paramedics were trying to free him from the wreckage of the twin steer truck.

The accident happened about 8.20pm. A male passerby initially phoned the crash into Gympie police.

Uniform police, firefighters, paramedics and the Forensic Crash Unit rushed to the scene but despite their efforts the driver was unable to be saved.

Police are investigating why the truck lost control as it was heading down the Conondale Range. "It has rolled over and skidded on the driver's side and then gone through the guard rails,'' a police spokesperson said.

The road surface was damaged during the removal of the wreckage and the Maleny Kenilworth Road at Witta is currently closed to allow repairs to be made. Detours have been put in place.

Meanwhile, a 30-year-old Woodford man was airlifted to the Royal Brisbane Hospital with serious injuries after his vehicle left the Burnett Highway at Eidsvold near Bundaberg and collided with a tree around 11.30 last night.

The man was the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle. Early indications are that he was thrown from the vehicle. He sustained serious injuries to his head, chest, abdomen and arms.

Anyone with information which could assist police with their investigations should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
