A truck driver had a lucky escape when his prime mover burst into flames on the Bruce Highway at Cooroy last night.

Around 9.20pm a Kenworth semi-trailer towing B Double combination trailers containing 63 tones of bananas caught alight.

The vehicle was traveling along the Bruce Highway at Cooroy when a passing motorist noticed smoke and flames coming from the engine compartment.

The motorist flagged down the driver who immediately stopped his vehicle jumping from the cabin moments before the prime mover was completely engulfed in flames.

The B Double trailers were slightly damaged by the fire and the load of bananas was undamaged. The fire is not believed to be suspicious.
