Tewantin -Noosa and Maroochydore shine as Sunshine Coast cricket season gets under way with T20 games
Last season’s finalists Tewantin-Noosa and Maroochydore have enjoyed the ideal start to their season with solid wins and records to boot.

Two wins each on the opening day of Sunshine Coast division 1 fixtures have given last season’s finalists Tewantin-Noosa and Maroochydore the ideal start for a rematch next month.
The Swans emerged from the strong pool at Buderim with wins over Glasshouse and Caboolture, on a day when all sides emerged from a disrupted winter needing a good hit out, and the benefits of the morning back in the middle were apparent.
In Round 1 a total of 511 runs were scored in the four matches, while on the same grounds after lunch this nearly doubled to 955 as batsmen got back into the swing of things.
The biggest recovery came at Caloundra, where a shaken Nambour faced Tewantin to open their campaign, but were overwhelmed by an already strong attack boosted by the addition of international Ben Laughlin.
Scott Aufderheide took the new ball to remove a scoreless skipper Nick Wallace to close the first over, then ended his second with the wicket of Hayden O’Connor for 2/5.
Tom Stewart moved the scoreboard to 3/5 in his second over, then stood aside for Laughlin’s Thunder debut with the ball, and the Cutters’ innings spiralled into disarray as the side was all out 27, an unenviable record for the competition, with Aufderheide’s 3/5 and Laughlins’s 2/11 aided by two runouts on the way.
When the Tewantin batsman reached the target in 23 deliveries another record emerged, along with a huge Net Run Rate bonus for the Thunder.
The afternoon promised no better for Nambour after Gympie posed a challenge of 124 after former Cutter Trent Riddell led with 66, but the turnaround by the Cutters was complete, as Wallace and O’Connor walked off in the final over at 0/127 to lift the club morale.
Preston White, Caboolture Player of the Year after the Snakes’ last premiership in 2018-19, showed his worth with a rare T20 five wicket haul of 5/6 in his return to the Coast, adding an unbeaten 23 while chasing down Coolum’s target of 57 in 6.5 overs.
Premiers Maroochydore chased down totals of 90 and 75 from Glasshouse and Caboolture respectively with Ashley Noffke Medallist Luke McInnes and a returning Danyn Stewart keeping targets low with nine wickets for 56 runs between them for the day.
In a season that looks to have couple of sides that will struggle to consistently compete, wins against such teams will be compulsory for premiership hopes, but wins over rivals are even more important, and the Swans managed two of those.
As opening rounds, the T20 games showed that the status will be much the same as the season before, closely contested by Maroochydore, Caboolture, Glasshouse and Tewantin-Noosa, with Caloundra still to reveal some new talent, Gympie and Nambour reliant on established players with bonuses from rising talent, and Coolum still looking for that quality batsman and bowler to inspire a maturing playlist.
Points after Round 2: Tewantin -Noosa, Maroochydore 4, Caboolture, Glasshouse, Nambour 2, Gympie, Coolum 0.
