Swimming pocket rockets hit the water at live-streamed event

Popular Swimming competition introduces live stream.

COOLUM will be able to cheer on its swimming pool pocket rockets this Saturday as local teams take on the top talent in the Wide Bay region at the Gympie Gold Rush transitional meet.

The Coolum and North Shore News is offering live streaming of the event hosted by the Gympie Gold Fins at the Gympie Aquatic Recreation Centre of more than 100 races happening from 8.30am.

Clubs from Noosa Aquatic Centre, Cooroy Dolphins, Tewantin, Good Shepherd, St Andrew's and Eumundi swim centres are expected to head north to test out their pre-Christmas form.

Coolum pool swim coach Jack Hawke is excited about taking the Coolum Peregian Darts team to the Gympie event and said while he may be fatigued 14-year-old backstroke Beau Patterson is one to watch.

"His speciality stroke is backstroke and it usually is 100 and 200 backstroke," he said.

"He's been working quite hard because he has state the following fortnight so this is his last build race before he heads into states."

The coach who has been training the Coolum Perigean Swim Club for two years said Patterson is a natural talent who inspires other swimmers.

"I would say he is the leader of the club at the moment in terms of everyone is currently looking to him not just performance wise but as a person, "he said.

Patterson said despite recovering from a shoulder industry he is looking forward to improving his times so he "can get the best result".

"I've only been training three times a week because I just came back from a shoulder injury … but I've been training hard so I can get the best result," Patterson said.

While important Patterson's results at the upcoming meet are all about building up to the Queensland State Swimming Championships from December 14 to 21.

"It's [states] going to be pretty amazing I went two years ago, and I was only there for the one event but this year I have a relay for the Wide Bay region and three other events.

The State swimmer said the event live stream is a great idea that will add another element to the Gympie Gold Rush meet.

"I think that will be pretty cool, people get to watch it and see all the swimmers smashing it," Patterson said.

Gympie Gold Fins president Dee White said there were great young swimmers ranging from 7-15 years old who are looking forward to racing on the day.
