A Sunshine Coast woman whose dachshund was killed in an violent dog attack has called for stricter laws to be implemented for pet owners.
In a petition created last week, Ms Torrie said her family’s dachshund, Duff, was on a morning walk in Caloundra when a bull arab broke free from a dog walker’s grip and mauled the smaller dog to death.
“No party was at fault as all dogs were on a leash, however, the Bull Arab broke free from its dog walker’s grip upon passing my sausage dogs and grabbed my little boy. He had no chance against such a big dog,” Ms Torrie said.
“I in no way want to blame the other dog and paint a further bad picture for larger dog breeds, who cop a copious amount of unnecessary abuse due to their vicious stereotype, but at the same time this dog did violently killed mine and I want to ensure this never happens again.”
Ms Torrie told Nine News Duff was killed “pretty much instantly” by the larger dog.
“The dog just grabbed hold of Duff and he was killed pretty much instantly,” she said.
“It’s just so cruel because he was just the sweetest little boy. He was just happy to do his own thing.
“Once you were in, you were in for life.”
Ms Torrie’s petition, which has received more than 850 signatures as of Monday, outlined a series of changes she would like to see implemented to prevent further violent dog attacks like the one that killed Duff.
The petition calls for reactive dogs to be forced to wear a muzzle while on walks and for dog walkers/pet sitters to have to attend animal training courses before taking responsibility for dogs they aren’t familiar with.
