The dust has settled on the Sunshine Coast Falcons inaugural local league player draft where A-grade coaches had their say for which affiliated players they wanted in their club’s colours for the 2024 season.
In recent seasons it’s been up to the Falcons Queensland Cup coaching staff to assign players evenly to each respective A-grade club but as you can imagine, some coaches and clubs feel as if they’ve been ‘hard done by’.
Falcons head coach Brad Henderson said he proposed the idea to the Sunshine Coast Rugby League board at the end of 2023.
“We were talking about player allocations between myself and my two assistant coaches Dan Murphy and Leon Cherry and it’s always an awkward part of the year trying to keep every club happy and things like that,” he said.
“The idea of a draft got thrown around and after we thought about it we figured there’s no reason why we can’t.”
Sunshine Coast and Gympie Rugby League seniors president Jodi Price said she was in full support of the idea.
“After our research we asked Brad (Henderson) to propose it to the local coaches to see what their thoughts were because ultimately it’s them that are affected by these allocations,” Price said.
“They all agreed so we went ahead with it and hopefully can see it continue over the coming years.”
Any genuine local players (eight of them) that had come through the junior ranks with a Sunshine Coast club were excluded from the draft, with the remaining players (30) placed into an availability pool.
The draft system worked backwards, starting with the team that finished bottom of the table in 2023 (Nambour) and ending with the premiers (Beerwah).
Given it’s their first time competing in the A-grade competition, Stanley Rivers were awarded the final pick behind Beerwah.
In the days leading up to the draft a player summary was sent around to all participating coaches outlining a bio, where each player had been, who they’ve played for, their availability, position and a spiel on their best traits to give coaches as much information as possible.
Coaches were then added into a WhatsApp group with the draft beginning on February 2.
“It started Friday night and there was a little bit of a stall waiting for Marty Cordwell from Nambour to make his pick but once he got the ball rolling on Saturday morning it was all done and dusted by Sunday evening,” Henderson said.
Henderson said he was pleased with how it was handled by coaches and his players.
“I spoke to all of the clubs at the end of last season and made them aware that it was really important that they weren’t trying to poach our Falcons players,” he said.
“We don’t need local clubs in their head, it’s where they go to when they’re not playing Falcons which they all understand now.
“There were a few plans in place that I knocked on the head pretty quickly to smoothen out the process and of course the boys wanted a bit more of a production value but who knows, maybe next year we can make a real night out of it all.
“Everyone bought into the process, there’s still no guarantees every week because ultimately they are still our players but it was good fun and I think that’s been reflected by the coaches, clubs and players.”
New Nambour head coach and former Falcons Marty Cordwell echoed Henderson’s statements.
“I think everyone got on board with the idea and it probably made it all a lot more consistent, knowing every coach and club was getting an equal opportunity,” he said.
“The Falcons players definitely bolster the local league but obviously you’ve got to plan like you’re not getting any Falcons players week-in-week-out, it’s more a bonus if you do get them.
“It gave everyone an opportunity to have their say in what players they wanted or what style of players they wanted which was good.
“Hopefully we win more football games this year so I end up with the last pick but I certainly think it was very transparent across the group of what the rules were and it all ran smoothly.”
