A mystery artist’s vandalism of a Sunshine Coast politician’s corflute sign has been praised by the community, with the local member creating an art competition to redesign his signs.
Nicklin MP Rob Skelton posed with one of his signs that had been found with graffiti near Palmwoods and posted it to social media stating the artwork offered something a bit different to the “usual crude vandals”.
“How good is this new corflute design! I was delighted to find this awesome piece of artwork in Palmwoods this morning,” Mr Skelton said.
“Makes a bit of difference from the usual crude vandals.”
It is believed the sign was removed from its initial spot in Palmwoods, and returned to the same location with the graffitied additions.
The community was quick to respond in support of the graffiti, with some offering to pay for reprints.
“That’s really awesome, should try and find the artist get it signed and make prints, I’d buy one,” one commenter said.
Another comment asked “has Banksy come to Australia?”
Mr Skelton also responded to a comment calling for the artist to be made a contender a street art group.
“I think I may have to organise a bit of art competition,” Mr Skelton responded.
On Thursday, Mr Skelton shared a link for “budding artists” to enter the corflute competition on his social media.
Those who wish to enter the competition can visit Mr Skelton’s office and pick up a corflute to graffiti, with the politician promising “generous prizes”.
