As the cost of living and interest rates increase many Sunshine Coast residents are being left with no choice but to chase higher paying jobs.
Owner of Sunnyjobs Recruitment Greg Katsanevas said he’d seen a “massive change” in the job market, with the higher paying white collar roles gaining the most interest from job hunters.
“It does come down to money, people can't afford to be getting paid $27 an hour when their rent is $600 a week,” Mr Katsanevas said.
“It used to be easier and cheaper to live.”
The recruiter said he had been living on the Sunshine Coast for more than 12 years and had seen the housing market go “crazy” in recent times.
“It has been driven by people who have made a name for themselves down in the southern states and they have relocated up here,” he told the Sunshine Coast Daily.
Mr Katsanevas said while the region was designed for lifestyle and known for having lower wages, he had seen more higher paying jobs becoming available.
One of these jobs Mr Katsanevas had dealt with was being offered by a local food manufacturing company that was looking for a health and safety adviser and were willing to pay $100,000 a year.
“That’s not a bad wage for the Sunshine Coast,” he said.
A significant rise in available positions had also been reported, with the amount of job advertisements on Seek increasing by 30.7 per cent from April, 2021 to April, 2022.
Despite more positions being posted, the applications per job had decreased by 47 per cent since 2019.
Managing Director at Seek Kendra Banks said the rise in advertisements demonstrated just how in-demand workers are.
Mr Katsanevas had seen this increase first-hand as the main problem the agency had was a lack of interest in the lower paying jobs like labour work.
“We haven’t had to work as hard as what we are right now to find people to place in the roles,” he said.
Mr Katsanevas said he couldn’t see the situation improving any time soon but hoped people that were able to work would start to apply for the many jobs on offer.
