More than 1000 Sunshine Coast students have been tested for Covid-19 as Queensland Health keeps searching for a “missing link” to recent cases.

Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service said more than 1000 students from Matthew Flinders Anglican College, Sunshine Coast Grammar and Immanuel Lutheran College came forward for testing earlier this month.

A service spokeswoman said none of the students had returned positive test results.

She did not say how many had tested negative or were yet to get their results.

“Queensland Health undertook this precautionary surveillance testing at several schools on the Sunshine Coast to determine if there was any link with the current Covid-19 cluster in Brisbane,” the spokeswoman said.

She did not say whether or not more students would undergo testing.

It comes after Queensland recorded eight new cases of Covid-19 overnight, seven of which were linked to the Indooroopilly State High School Delta outbreak.

At least 40 cases have been linked to the Indooroopilly school cluster.

It was understood a returned Buderim traveller had links to one of the three Sunshine Coast private schools that underwent testing this week and the three schools had been targeted for testing due to their proximity to each other.

Queensland Health has not found a link between but it’s understood the department will endeavour to discover it.

Chief health officer Dr Jeannette Young said on August 4 that it was “absolutely possible” the missing link may never be uncovered.

“Yes, it is entirely possible we’ll never find the link between one of those two cases that came into Queensland on June 29 and this family of five,” Dr Young said.

“It’s very possible we’ll never find that link because it could have been someone who got infected at the airport or in hotel quarantine or in the hospital or in the community.

“…so yes, it’s absolutely possible we’ll never find the missing link.”
