Community services were at the forefront of the Sunshine Coast Council’s July meeting, as the councillors unanimously moved to endorse a land deal for a new $15m community centre and extend funding for local sport clubs.

The council’s July ordinary meeting was held on Wednesday morning, where motions were put to councillors including a site proposal for a $15m Police Citizens Youth Club development.

The Queensland government pledged to spend $15m on the project, with the centre expected to be operational within two years, pending development approvals.

The 6500sq m site in Caloundra South is currently owned by Stockland, who will hand the property over to the council under Aura’s infrastructure agreement.

The leasing terms between the council and PCYC are still being discussed, according to the report.

Councillor Jenny Broderick said the centre would suit the Caloundra South community due to the large population of residents aged under 17 years.

“We are excited to be able to support the establishment of this new centre,” Ms Broderick said.

“PCYC facilities across the state are renowned for providing a safe space for youth and a place to cater for a range of community activities, events and sports.”

All councillors also agreed to the extension of funding allocated for Sunshine Coast sport clubs to include the newly-formed Nirimba Hurricanes and an increase to the funds allocated to the Coolum Cricket Club Inc as they expand to Marcoola.

The cricket club will receive an extra $12,268 per year to maintain the Keith Royal Oval in Marcoola.

The Nirimba Hurricanes Junior Rugby League Club will take over two new fields in Caloundra South from March 2025.

The council’s sports field maintenance funding program currently provides funding to 48 clubs on the Sunshine Coast to maintain local fields.
