New state-of the-art $22m emergency service centres are set for Caloundra South.

The state government is funding the construction of the $8.5m fire station and $13.5m police station at Nirimba.

Police and Emergency Services Minister Mark Ryan visited the Sunshine Coast this week to confirm construction would soon start.

“We know that a lot of people are moving to this part of the world and we want to make sure we’ve got the services, world-class services, to support community safety,” he said.

Mr Ryan said the new positions based at the emergency centres would be “over and above the existing baseline”.

Mr Ryan said they’re only a month away from getting access to the site for construction to start.

Sunshine Coast Police Superintendent Craig Hawkins said the policing service was grateful for the new facility and 30 extra police officers that would be coming into the area.

“We’re anticipating a 50,000 population to come into this particular location, and with that comes demand on policing services,” he said.

“With the numbers that I’ve currently got in Caloundra, it can’t support meeting the demand that not only they have currently but for an additional 50,000.

“It’s certainly a significant commitment and certainly going to alleviate our ability to be able to meet that demand.”

Commissioner Greg Leach said it would be an important addition to fire and emergency services on the Sunshine Coast.

“We’re going to have a new state-of-the-art fire station,” he said.

“We’ll have one officer and three firefighters on duty 24 hours a day seven days a week.”

Caloundra MP Jason Hunt said he believed the community would welcome the news.

“I’ve always called the Bellevue Creek Arterial Road eight kilometres of good news and that’s what this story is,” he said.
