A Coast primary school is gearing up to take part in the State of Origin half time match at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on Sunday night.

Caloundra State Primary School will take centre stage at half time of the match between Queensland and New South Wales in front of a 52,000 sold out crowd.

The grade three boys and girls team will be classed as the mini maroons and play against a Sydney-based primary school in the Little Origin Match.

Caloundra teacher and rugby league co-ordinator, Tim Hackney, said his students and players couldn’t be more excited.

“Seeing all of the smiles on the kids faces and giving them the opportunity to create an everlasting memory is amazing,” he said.

“It’s great to have both boys and girls representing our school and having fun.

“Each player was selected based off their behaviour and the fact they play rugby league for a junior coast club, so they all really love the game and are really excited for the event.”

Two of the team’s players, Nate Anderson, 8, and Harry Coates, 9, entered the statewide competition and submitted a video to the NRL about how much they love the game.

The winning school also received $5,000 thanks to Mr Hackney who was able to explain what the school would do with the money if chosen.

Among thousands of applications, Caloundra’s was selected, and Mr Hackney said it’s great to be involved.

“The theme of the boys video was that kids should put down the technology and get outside to play some rugby league,” he said.

The ten lucky players will all also have the chance to meet the NRL stars and participate in skill sessions in the lead up to the match.

“All of the players are really excited to have the chance to play some footy but to also to meet the players who they watch on TV each week.”

Game two of the State of Origin series will kick off at 7:50pm on Sunday, June 27.
