CRICKET: A white ball weekend saw out spring and started summer for Sunshine Coast Division 1 fixtures with the first one-day round on Saturday leading to yesterday’s Kennard’s Hire T20 openers.

Caloundra and Tewantin-Noosa maintained Henzell Oval’s reputation for high scores as the Thunder knocked up a formidable 7/297 challenge for the hosts.

New veteran Jarrod Officer celebrated his 100th one-dayer with an equal number of runs in a 124 pairing with Andy Kratzmann, 51, after Peter Walker’s 45 lit the fuse.

Officer’s second OD century came off just 61 deliveries with 14 fours and two sixes, pushing Tewantin to a target too high for the Caloundra chase, but 8/251 from the Lighthouses showed urgency, with three run-outs keeping the pressure on. Four or five good starts found none passing the half-century as the Thunder passed the test in their top four quest.

Caboolture demonstrated why the Snakes stay at the top by defending 162 against Glasshouse at Grant Road, both sides finding runs hard to gather. The early loss of Luke Ryan and Matt Schubert’s run-out set them back at 2/25, then Jett Taylor claimed the prize scalp of Glen Batticciotto as the visitors choked any revival.

An opening 53 stand from in-form pair Tim Taylor and Dan Cahill had the Rangers’ reply purring along until Batticciotto bowled Cahill on 27. From there the home side turned the screws while Matt Jenkins 2/8, and Jack Connew 4/15, sparked a top-order collapse, assisted by two run-outs, that left Taylor to persist alone again. His eventual 41 came from 114 deliveries while the visitors succumbed for a disappointing 125.

Coolum’s first visit to Gympie brought no rewards as the Sharks scrambled to three figures on Keith Manthie Oval, where a Troy Ashton masterclass of nine overs, 3/9, took his career tally to 450 wickets from 263 games for the Gold.

Jackson White cashed in at the end with three wickets from 11 deliveries to limit the chase to 100, a total the home side claimed in 19 overs for a double bonus point victory, their season’s first win.

Maroochydore added a bonus point to the win at Nambour after dismissing the Cutters for 111 at the Showgrounds. Only Kobi Griggs with 48 and Nick Wallace, 17, reached double figures as the last half dozen fell for 18 runs. Reid Anderson sparked the fall with three wickets.

Adam Thornton and Callum Stitt looked to seal the win before Stitt went for 43. Thornton had an unbeaten 50 for the Swans, to 2/112.
