A new Sunshine Coast rugby union competition has been launched complete with live music and after parties in a bid to shake up the sport.

Sunshine Coast Rugby Union has announced its inaugural Invitational Rugby Sevens event will take place later this year.

The event would be held at Caloundra on October 30 as a social tournament for 10 men’s and 10 women‘s teams.

Sunshine Coast Rugby Union competitions manager Mike Aronsten said they wanted to add some variety to the current season layout.

“We put out a call to clubs for expressions of interests and the premise of the event was well received from coaches and players,” he said.

“It gives the players a chance to play some 7s rugby which is quite different to the regular 15-a-side format.

“It also puts each club on an even playing field so it’ll be interesting to see what payers put their hands up to take part.”

Caloundra Lighthouse players, Harry Bartram, Jake Helgesen, Riley Waugh and Bryce Cathcart are excited for the new event.

The event would primarily focus on the current senior teams competing on the Sunshine Coast.

Aronsten said it would be a chance for players, coaches and fans to unwind at the regular season’s end.

“It will be a fun and relaxed atmosphere which will be good,” he said.

“There will be an afterparty and live music towards the end of the day’s play so it all ties into an end of season celebration.”

Aronsten said he hoped to see the event continue.

“I’m excited for it all and I believe it will have success which will ultimately make it an annual event,” he said.

“Caloundra always do a great job at hosting certain events and overall it should be a fantastic day of rugby.”
