Sunshine Coast Falcons will wave goodbye to three club legends this weekend as the club competes in their final home game of the season in a bid to keep their slim finals hopes alive.

Players Dane Hogan, Todd Murphy and Martin Cordwell will play their final games in the black and yellow if the Falcons lose on Sunday against the Central Queensland Capras.

Head coach Sam Mawhinney said the impact the three players have had on the club cannot be understated.

“They’re each a massive part of this club and we want to put in a good performance for them to make it a memorable day,” he said.

The Falcons (9th) must win on Sunday and hope that the Northern Pride (8th), who are 2 points ahead, lose to the Burleigh Bears on Saturday for the Falcons to advance to the finals.

Mawhinney said he knows his team would be up for the challenge against bottom of the table Capras.

“We’ve got to stick to what we’ve been doing the last couple of weeks, which is getting into a grind and building pressure when it matters,” he said.

“If we’re running hard through the middle, kicking to corners well and defending with some effort we definitely believe we can break them down.”

We caught up with current captain Todd Murphy and club favourite Martin Cordwell to find out what they’d miss most about representing the club.

“I’ll definitely miss the boys and the natural camaraderie that comes with playing footy,” he said.

“For me making the Queensland Residents team in 2014 was a highlight but to be honest there’s way too many good memories I’ve experienced.

“I’m hoping the results we need we get this weekend so it’s not all over but if it is there’s not much you can do and it’s something I’ll definitely miss.”

“I’ve been playing for the club since 2006 and it’s been a great ride,” he said.

“I’ve had a lot of good years with the club and it means a lot to me to represent the Falcons and the Sunshine Coast.

“I’ve wanted to play footy at a high level since I was a kid so it’s quite surreal for me to compete week in week out in the Queensland Cup competition.”
