Sunshine Beach State High School’s first rugby union team in five years has made a barnstorming start to their hiatus-ending season.
The under-18 second division XV has made the perfect start to the season, knocking over St. Andrews 17-7 and then rolling powerhouse Sunshine Coast Grammar School 14-10.
The team is in good hands, led by head coach and former Noosa Dolphins A-grade coach Mick ‘Roxy’ Phelan and well known Dolphins clubman Damien ‘Coges’ Cogill.

Phelan said it was great to see the boys enjoying their footy on Wednesday nights.
“Obviously Sunshine High is one of the schools in the Noosa area that makes up the Noosa Dolphins Colts and Juniors Colts teams,” he said.
“It's terrific to see these boys putting their hands up wanting to play school rugby union for their school and embracing the competition.”
Players of note that have performed well so far have been captain Jarrah Charlesworth, Reon Fortington, Harry Dwyer, Oscar Brough and Jake Borhanuddin.
Phelan said these early round wins had been massive for his side's confidence and he was looking forward to seeing it continue.
“The opening round against St. Andrews was a really good test for us and those boys that had never played before were all very quick learners which helped us a lot,” he said.
“Since then, we’ve continued to build and gained another massive win against Grammar.”
The team is roughly made up of a dozen rugby union players along with five rugby league players and a few AFL players.
Phelan said his expectations have grown from the opening weeks.
“We’re now up to our necks in terms of expectations given our first few results,” he said.
“That’s a credit to all of the boys but especially the boys from the other sporting codes that have learnt the ins and outs of union so quickly.
“If we can all keep our heads and continue to perform the way we are, we can definitely give the competition a red hot crack.”
Phelan said he was enjoying being part of the team and was looking forward to the rest of the season.
“Coges and myself are really enjoying it all and the enthusiasm from the boys is really positive to see,” he said.
Sunshine Beach SHS will take on St. Andrews in round four of the competition on Wednesday, May 12 at 6pm at Noosa Rugby Union Club.
