RACING: Larry Cassidy labelled So Dapper a potential Group horse off the back of a five-length trial defeat and hasn’t changed his mind since as the son of So You Think made it three on end at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday.

John Symons said he and co-trainer Sheila Laxon, who completed a double with Mewstone Rock a race later, were “shattered” on the dawn of last year’s winter carnival when So Dapper pulled a hamstring and had to be spelled.

“We had him in a nice maiden for his first start and he pulled up lame after a gallop, so he had to miss the whole carnival,” Symons said. “He’s just beaten a couple of horses (Dawson Diva and A Man To Match) who were competitive in the races we would have been aiming at, so I think he would have measured up.”

Symons is eyeing a Magic Millions start and intends to use the newly created race, the $250,000 Wave (3&4YO, WFA, 1800m), at the Gold Coast on January 4, as a potential qualifier for the 2200m MM Trophy the following week.

Cassidy led and controlled yesterday’s Class 3 Plate (1800m), with the more fancied pair of A Man To Match ($3.30, second) and Dawson Diva ($2.15, unplaced) left as forlorn chasers as the winner came home in sub 35sec.

“I rode him in a barrier trial, where he missed the start by 10 lengths and only beat one home, but off his last furlong, I thought he was a Group horse,” Cassidy said.

“He settled beautifully (on Saturday) and I haven’t changed the initial opinion I had.”
