The Woombye train continued on its merry way, rolling over Nambour-Yandina United 8-0 in Saturday night’s McDonald’s Premier League local derby.
Luke Alderson bagged four goals, extending his season tally to 19, as the Snakes continued their charge up the premiership ladder.
They are in second place, one point clear of NYU with a game in hand, and pose a serious threat to Maroochydore’s premiership hopes.
Snakes coach Gary Newcome said he was trying to figure out what happened with the second-versus-third clash blowing out.
“I’m still trying to work it out,” he said.
“There are no words to explain it. We got an early goal but they came back strongly in the next 25 minutes and I was hoping we could hang on for a 1-0 lead at half-time.
“But we got another couple of goals and then it blew out in the second half.”
Alderson slotted the first two goals of the match, before Josh Walton chipped in to give the Snakes a 3-0 lead at the break.
Alderson completed his hat-trick early in the second half and made it 5-0 when he scored his fourth.
Mitch Innocend chipped in with the sixth, Walton bagged a double and Craig Hawkins rounded out the eight.
“I don’t think anyone predicted that at the start,” Alderson said.
“We just played to our strengths. We were really up for it.
“We were committed, pressured them and most of all we worked for each other. We didn’t want to let each other down. We stuck to our game plan and there wasn’t one weak player in the team.”
Alderson, who’s leading the golden boot tally, said Woombye was still hopeful of catching Maroochydore, which is eight points ahead.
“Every game’s a must-win from here,” he said. “We proved we can perform when it matters. It was like a grand final (against NYU).
“It’s the first time (this season) we’ve had a full-strength team and you’ve got to perform or you’ll be on the bench. Complacency isn’t an issue because we’ve got to fight for positions.”
