A YOUNG rugby prodigy is tackling his dreams and heading straight to the big league.
Mountain Creek State High School student Zack Lamont, 15, is already putting down roots in the sport he wants to one day make his career.
The star halfback was recently selected in the Queensland 15 Years Rugby League Maroons Team and is currently signed with the Melbourne Storm.
Zack said he was "stoked” to be chosen for the prestigious side.
"Because I was out last year from breaking my arm, I didn't get the chance to make it,” he said. "So I'm really happy I have the opportunity now.”
Although Zack already has his foot in the door through attending training sessions with the Melbourne Storm, he says competing at the National Championships in Redcliffe will help kick-start his career.
"A lot of people are there watching and it's the best level of footy possible to play, so it's an opportunity to improve myself,” he said.
Being on the field with his mates is Zack's favourite aspect of rugby league.
"I really love the game. It's done a lot for me so I just appreciate everything it means,” he said.
"Other people around you make you better, so it's great having a team that brings out the best in you.”
Mountain Creek State High School acting head of department for physical education Cameron Boaza said it was unusual for a school boy from the Coast to be selected in the state team.
"He went against some of the best rugby league players of his age group across the state, so for the Sunshine Coast to get a school boy, especially in the Maroons side, is a massive achievement,” he said.
Mr Boaza said the competition would set Zack up for his future in footy.
"It's definitely a really good opportunity to put himself out there and be on the radar,” he said.
"No doubt, as a kid with his calibre, he will have a lot of teams chasing after him.”
Zack will compete at Redcliffe's Dolphin Stadium, from June 30-July 5.
