While some her age are juggling their lunch box, Matthew Flinders Anglican College student Rosie McMahon is dealing with the pressures of high school and the intensity of being a dual elite level sports woman.
As well as her achievements at a regional level, in the past 12 months McMahon has represented Queensland for the U14s football team, school U13-15 football team, state U13 futsal team, Indigenous women's cricket team and just last month pulled on the green and gold jersey for the junior U17 Matildas football team and captained the Sunshine Coast school U13-15 cricket team.
The grade nine student who plays as an attacking midfielder in football and an all rounder in cricket said recent competitions and training camps were great experiences.
“The junior Matildas camp was intense but really fun,” she said.
“We played three matches against Korea Republic which was special and there was definitely tips that our coach Rae Dower gave to everyone which was really helpful.
“The cricket state championships was the day after the Matildas camp so I was a bit knackered but it was really fun.
“I was the middle age so had girls younger and older than me but it was awesome to be selected as the captain for my side and it was a good competition.”
McMahon, who travels to Brisbane for training with Queensland Academy of Sport two to three times per week said she was thankful for the support she receives.
“On the way down and up I do a lot of school work,” she said.
“It’s great to have the support from Lauren Nourse and especially from Mum and Dad who take time off work to drive me down to training or games.
“It’s definitely a dream to play professionally.”
McMahon is a player for the Sunshine Coast Scorchers, being awarded the U15 player of the carnival at the Queensland State Championships and crowned 2021/22 junior female of the year.
She also represents Sunshine Coast Wave Futsal and will compete at the U14 Schools State Championships from November 24 to 26.
Flinders Elite Athlete Program director Ms Lauren Nourse said she was proud of Rosie’s commitment.
“Rosie is one of our best students, she balances her school work really well, shows great leadership and is a kind and caring student that as a school we’re very proud of,” she said.
