With the opening rounds of the QAFL and QAFLW season underway we can uncover our next instalment of who the senior coaches have named as their clubs ‘most exciting Colts or up-and-coming player’.
Each week, we will reveal which player from each team stood out across the pre-season and through the opening rounds, with the greatest ball winner and best ball user to be uncovered in the coming weeks.

Week 5: Most exciting Colts or up-and-coming player
QAFL
Aspley, Daniel Webster: Rhiley Owens, in his first proper pre-season after a lot of injury issues. Made his debut and kicked his first senior goal in round five in the sides 16.13.109-5.7.37 victory.
Broadbeach, Craig O’Brien: Ben Brown, Jake Rogers and Leo Lombard.
Labrador, Clint Watts: Matt Hoy, is only 15-years-old but is competing extremely well with the senior group.
Maroochydore, Ben Jones: Caleb Silva and Bailey Hahn, two exciting players that are still eligible to play colts this year but are ready and have proven their ability to step up and play senior footy this season.
Morningside, Paul Egan: Hugo Crawford, Matthew Robson and Charlie Cole
Noosa, Chris Rourke: Wil O’Dwyer, the youngster has played as an on-baller in pre-season and seems to have taken some big steps ahead of arguably his biggest season yet. The 21-year-old was a bolter in the best and fairest ranks last year.
Redland Victoria Point, Phil Carse: Dan Annable and Alex Pope, 16-year-olds both pushing to play senior football.
Sherwood, Jarad Marsh: Owen Collins. Lions Academy half back
Surfers Paradise, Matt Lappin: Oscar Wood. 16-year-old ruckman, part of the Gold Coast Suns program over 200cm tall and a promising player.
QAFLW
Bond University, Andy Lovell: Tshinta Kendall. She’s a young Indigenous athlete who has recently crossed over from rugby union, and Izzy lower, tall forward who has come out of the Burleigh Bombers U17s program.
Aspley Hornets, Luke Glacken: Lilu Hung, has been given the vice-captaincy role this season and another Brisbane Lions Academy talent that has been given the green light to showcase her talent in the senior grade.
Coorparoo Kings, Rebecca Randazzo: Hannah McLaughlin. A multisport athlete, cricket gun but focusing on footy this year. Past Suns Academy member.
Southport Sharks, Peter Doherty: Georja Davies. Younger sister of Giselle, Fleur and Darcy, will be in her first year of senior football.
Maroochydore, Dave Hume: Sophie Peters, the Brisbane Lions Academy talent is a special player on the rise and will look to expand on her skills this season.
UQ, Ross Clayfield: Ashleigh Moyle
Wilston Grange, Brenton Meddings: Mia Geere, a Brisbane Lions Academy player that has stamped her feet in the Queensland system and will look to kick on through senior footy in 2023.
Yeronga, Lisa Milne: ‘Big Steph’. Kenmore junior who stands at about five foot, but takes on some of the biggest places in the game.
