Rising Queensland racing mother-and-son duo Corey and Kylie Geran say they are happy with their past season performances as they hope to now establish their names in the metropolitan ranks.

At the end of the 2022/23 season the Gerans recorded 37 wins and 100 placings from 281 provincial starts while at the metropolitan level they finished with four wins and nine placings from 48 starts.

Corey, 27, said he had enjoyed his introductory years and hoped to continue his stable’s progressive form.

“Racing has been in the family for a number of generations so mum has been training for about 15 years and dad (Gary) has been a jockey all his life,” he said.

Geran began in the industry working for John Symons and Sheila Laxon while earning a business and law degree on the Sunshine Coast.

After graduating and launching his own stable, Geran relocated back to Toowoomba in 2020 where he went into a training partnership with his mum.

“I started on the Sunshine Coast with four or five horses, moved back to Toowoomba with around 12 and now have about 45 horses in work,” he said.

“Each season has been our best to date so it’s definitely a different operation now than what it was two years ago but I’m enjoying the challenge and happy with where we are at.”

He said he was excited for the rest of the 2023/24 season.

“We’ve been able to win a few good Saturday races now so our aim is to keep targeting those city races and that next step is to step it up a notch by looking at winning a stakes or a group race,” he said.

Following a close second from Our Magnus at Eagle Farm on October 14, Geran said he was eager for more positive results in the coming weeks.

“Our Magnus was a $10,000 maiden purchase who was just beaten in town recently but has returned us over $100,000 and Nikau Spur we paid $30,000 for and he’s won about $180,000,” he said.

“He has gone for a spell now after finishing second in the Toowoomba Cup but we’re excited to get those two horses back and really see how far we can go with them.

“We bought another runner last week called Without Revenge who is a nice staying horse and we’re probably looking at taking him to Sydney for a race on Melbourne Cup day.”
