Kawana Dolphins A-grade rugby league players have put pen to paper on a trip of a lifetime as they head to the UK to represent Rochdale Mayfield in the Challenge Cup and National Conference League.

Brothers Devlin and Travis Long along with good mates Dakota Tolhurst and Sam Wright touched down in Rochdale on January 16 after a number of interviews and highlight clips were exchanged.

Wright, who has played alongside Travis since they were 10, said he was thankful for the support.

“Definitely a huge thanks goes to Andrew Hinson who set this all up for us and also all the boys and staff that have supported us with the move,” Wright said.

“We’re all really looking forward to the different style of play, different club environment and the travel while we are here.

“Experiencing a whole new world really.”

The four players were all part of the 2021 grand final victory over the Maroochydore Swans with explosive centre Tolhurst being voted as South East Queensland’s best outside back in June 2022.

Wright said they were all very excited for the coming months.

“It’s awesome having the four of us together,” he said.

“It gives us someone to connect to and deal with the same issues being away from home and experience everything together.

“The whole concept is definitely a very cool experience and hopefully a footy highlight for us to talk about when we are older because I think we’ll be proud of ourselves for taking a risk.

“It’s always tough leaving home but there’s a big world out there that is there to explore.

“I myself always look for opportunities to play footy overseas so it seems like the best of both worlds to play footy and to travel.”
