GOLF: Katherine Hull produced one of the day’s best rounds at the LPGA Tour’s Avnet Classic yesterday but it wasn’t enough, as the Sunrise Beach product finished tied for sixth.
Hull charged home from 12th position, posting three-under in the final round at the Alabama tournament to finish on five-under, five strokes behind Sweden’s Maria Hjorth, who claimed her fifth tour title.
A bogey on the par-three second hole was the only blemish on Hull’s final 18, with her 69 being the third-best round of the day.
Sixteen-year-old Alexis Thompson’s bid to become the youngest LPGA Tour winner ended badly.
Thompson shared the lead heading into the final round but faded badly with a closing 78 to plummet to a tie for 19th.
Hjorth posted a second-straight five-under-par 67 for a 10-under total of 278 to win by two shots from joint overnight leader Kim Song-Hee (71).
Hjorth advised Thompson not to dwell on the negative.
“I just hope that she learns things from it.
“She’s going to be a great player,” Hjorth said.
