THEY are the ones who slave for hours doing thankless jobs – running the canteen, cutting up oranges, washing jumpers, going over balance sheets.
They are the lifeblood of rugby league, and now the game has given something back to some of its forgotten heroes.
Last night the Sunshine Coast Gympie Rugby League inducted 26 of its former and current volunteers and administrators into its Hall of Fame.
The organisation used its gala season-launch dinner at the Caloundra RSL to pay respect to some of those who have given so much to the 13-man game.
“Volunteers really are the backbone of our game,” SCGRL chief executive officer James Ward said.
“Without them it just doesn't happen. While some of what they do might not seem all that important, it is. The game doesn't happen without them.”
The list of inductees was chosen by a selection panel headed by former Olympic boxer and long-time league administrator Benny Pike.
Ward said the award was a small token of the league's appreciation.
“If I could use the example of our secretary, Rhondda Poor. I'm aware of how much effort she puts in to ensure the league runs to its potential,” he said.
“I can only assume that those of bygone eras put in a similar effort.
“That being said, I'm sure a lot of them will be humbled by this award, but it really is just a small gesture of our appreciation.”
