Coast AFL talent Carter Michael is moulding his game from some superstars of the sport as his transition from Roo to Lion moves to the next level.

Michael, who is a former Maroochydore Roo, was selected in last year's AFL draft by the Brisbane Lions alongside good mate Blake Coleman.

Standing 188cm tall, Michael is a product of the Lions Academy and serves as a hybrid defender, currently playing as a half back.

He said he couldn't have been happier with how his time at the Lions was progressing.

"The move from the Coast has been really smooth and it's been good living with Paul McConnell, who is the club's doctor and Henry Smith, who is another draftee," Michael, 18, said.

"I've got a really good mentor in Harris Andrews who is one of the best blokes at the club and a future captain in my opinion.

"I'm very fortunate to have him by my side and for him to be giving me tips along the way."

Sharing similar attributes to club legend, Daniel Rich, his beaming left foot and long blonde locks make him hard to miss out on the field.

Michael said he tried to play in a similar style to Rich and fellow Lion Grant Birchall.

"It's great to be able to learn about how they go about their craft and to see the little things they do each week to help them perform at the elite level," Michael said.

The Lions have started the VFL season with two wins and two losses.

Michael said his team had been highly competitive, even in he losses.

"I think because we are such a young team, the results have been really mixed," he said.

"A lot more of the mature players are in and out of the squad each week which makes things a bit difficult when we come up against some of the bigger bodied sides of the competition."

Michael said he hoped to continue playing his best footy and to sign another contract with the Lions.

"My main focus right now is to get another contract as I'm currently on the books until 2022," he said.

"I'm just working hard and will hopefully be rewarded with another contract to stay with the Lions because it's looking like an extremely exciting future for the club and I would love to be a part of it."
