IF you have ever wanted to be in the Guinness Book of World Records, this might be your chance.
Organisers of the Men of League All Stars fundraiser on June 11 are flirting with the idea of attempting to hold the world’s biggest touch football match at the event at Caloundra.
A search of the Guinness World Records website revealed the “largest touch/mini/tag rugby tournament” was attended by 2610 participants in Hong Kong last year.
Whether Australia’s adaptation of touch football falls under this label is not known but organiser Nick Paterson said an attempt to break or set a record could happen.
“It’s more of a thought than anything actually put in place at the moment,” Paterson said yesterday.
“We’re trying to find out what the largest game of touch is that’s ever been played and if it’s possible we’ll try to get everyone at the ground to participate.
“If it’s 500 on 5000 that’ll be pretty decent and maybe we’ll get a record but it’s more to try to attract people to the football and another way to enjoy the day.”
Records aside, a big crowd is expected to turn out at Shark Park for the third annual Men of League All Stars-Caloundra Sharks match. The ledger stands at one each after Caloundra took last year’s match, which was played in driving rain in front of about 1500 people.
Brisbane Broncos legends Allan Langer, Tonie Carroll and Steve Renouf were the big attractions last year and Paterson said he was hoping they would return to support the event, which will raise money for the Currimundi Special School.
Confirmed starters for the All Stars include NRL legends Julian O’Neill, Scott Hill, Marcus Bai, Noel Goldthorpe and Danny Nutley.
Other matches will also be played during the day, with the special school to play in the curtain-raiser to the main event. A function will be held in the clubhouse afterwards, where some of the jerseys will be auctioned.
Pelican Motors has jumped on board as the All Stars’ jersey sponsor.
Anyone interested in supporting the event can contact Caloundra Senior Rugby League on 5492 2166.
The Sharks have the bye in that round of Caloundra RSL Cup fixtures and have offered to play the All Stars.
