It’s been one of the most drawn out seasons in history but the region’s best handlers of a hockey stick are close to deciding who will go home with the grand final trophies.

Sunshine Coast hockey grand finals will start at Ballinger Park in Buderim on Saturday, September 11 from 8am to about 8pm.

A total of four junior and four senior matches will be livestreamed on the Courier Mail website.

With only one point separating the Caloundra Seahawks and Flinders in the men's division one competition, Seahawks captain Joel McMahon said it would be a close encounter.

“We found ourselves in the same situation last year and were unable to get the chocolates so this time round we’re hoping to make the difference,” he said.

“The results throughout the season have been real tight but given we were able to be crowned minor premiers which was a huge confidence boost.

“Personally I think this is the strongest outfit we’ve had in a number of years so I think this is the year for us to take it out and I know the boys are up for the challenge.”

McMahon said work of his teammates off the ball would be key.

“I think in attack it will be a game for our midfielders to control the ball but no doubt we’ll rely on our defence like we have all season,” he said.

Sunshine Coast Hockey Association president Warren Flower said he couldn't be happier with the support shown during a disjointed season.

“It’s been really good to be able to get through the season given the setbacks and delays due to Covid-19,” he said.

“The atmosphere at the semi finals was amazing and if that was anything to go by we should be in for a major day’s play on Saturday.

“We ended up selling out of everything we had on offer at the semi-finals which wasn't ideal but a great indication of the support we had.”
