A number of the Sunshine Coast’s best young hoopers will compete for school pride at the annual Champion Basketball School of Queensland open tournament on the Gold Coast.
Hosted by Basketball Queensland from Thursday through to Sunday at the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre, the tournament will also be livestreamed by NewsCorp as part of our ongoing coverage of the sport.
Sunshine Coast schools taking to the court include Mountain Creek State High School, Good Shepherd Lutheran College, Matthew Flinders Anglican College, Unity College and Pacific Lutheran College.
Mountain Creek SHS boys championship division head coach Zane Meehl said he was excited to see what his team could produce.
“They’ve all been working pretty hard in training so for them to finally get out there and compete it will be fun to watch,” he said.
“We’ve got a strong tradition that our boys and girls teams have been competing at the highest level for a number of years now.
“For them to stay at that top level each year you have to finish in a certain spot the year before so we’re very proud to keep this tradition going.”
St Margaret Mary’s College from Townsville will look to capture another title in the girls Division 1 tournament, while teams will look to knock off Anglican Church Grammar School in the boys.
Meehl said his team had a mixture of players from various club sports.
“The great thing about school sport is that you get a great blend of sporting backgrounds in your team,” he said.
“We have a few AFL and rugby league players in the boys and I know the girls have players from netball and AFL backgrounds as well.”
Meehl said he hoped to see four days of competitive basketball across the competition.
“Our goal each year is to go away and play a good style of basketball,” Meehl said.
“At the end of the day we’ve got a proud history at this school so as long as we're putting our best foot forward that’s all we ask for.”
