Coast AFL star Jack Payne will continue his lifelong attachment to the Brisbane Lions after becoming the latest young gun to commit his future to the club.

The former Noosa Tigers junior has supported the Lions since he was a kid and had no hesitation signing a new three year deal that tied him to the club until the end of 2024.

The 21-year-old defender broke into the senior side for five games last season and added to his tally in the opening rounds of the current season before a foot injury ruled him out of the round 4 clash against the Western Bulldogs.

Payne said it was a massive experience to make his AFL debut last season and was eager to get back out onto the field.

“I really took a lot of things away from my debut and the rest of the games I played in last season,” he said.

“I put in a lot of work over the off-season after getting a taste for it in 2020 so I really wanted build on those performances and I’m looking to cement a spot in the team this year.

He said he was hoping to be ready to return by round 14.

The Lions Academy product said there were plenty of players within the team who offered advice and helped wherever they could.

“I was able to spend a year with Luke Hodge when he was here and he was really good helping players with gym or vision by watching film post game,” Payne said.

“Guys now like Harris Andrews and Lachie Neale are really good and I’ve been in rehab with Lachie for a few weeks now along with Jarrod Berry and Cam Rayner where we’ve all formed a good bond.”

With a return from injury on the horizon Payne said it was an exciting time for him.

“It’s a real family club here and I love being apart of it,” he said.

“I’m really looking to attack rehab over the coming weeks and I’m looking to build on how I started this year.”
