A Coast boxer is not letting his dream outweigh reality as he locks down a solid back-up option in case things don’t work out in the ring.

It took Sam “The Surgeon” Cameron-Hands less than 30 seconds to win his debut professional fight and he is keen to lock in his next bout.

But that won’t be at the expense of his studies and work in real estate industry.

The 22-year-old knocked out opponent Chris Hunt with a damaging left hook 29 seconds into the first round of their Brisbane fight on March 13.

It was his first professional fight in the lightweight division and he said it was an amazing feeling to come away with the win.

“I know we’ve been training really hard in the camp so it was a really nice feeling to see all that time in the gym pay off,” he said.

“It was a really nice reward to have a lot of my family and friends watching.”

Cameron-Hands said his team didn’t expect the fight to be over so quickly.

“To be honest I wish it (the fight) went longer,” he said.

“As it was my opponent’s third professional fight I remember during the lead up my coach kept telling me to just take my time and to get a feel for things at the professional level.

“I was doing that and then the first real punch I threw turned out to be my last.”

He said his immediate focus, however, was completing his property economics studies at university and working full time as a sales and leasing cadet.

Cameron-Hands said education was an important tool.

“I think everyone should be educated and knowledgeable in a certain field,” he said.

“For myself, I see my degree and my current job as a backup just in case things don't go to plan, but also as something I have on my resume for when it’s time to hang up the gloves.”

Winning is nothing new for Cameron-Hands, who had a notable boxing career when he was younger.

He was crowned Australian champion in 2015, was Queensland champion six times and National Golden Gloves champion four times.

Cameron-Hands said is professional debut was a memorable milestone.

“It’s been a long-term goal of mine and it was a massive thing for me to be able to tick off,” he said.

“The overall experience was amazing and the atmosphere was huge and I honestly can’t wait to do it again.”

He said his aspirations had grown since his debut and he was looking forward to his next fight.

“As soon as my university studies are out of the way I really want to go all in on boxing,” he said.

“I want to start making a name for myself and I know I can definitely compete at a high level by winning Australian titles and fighting overseas.

“There’s not a level I want to stop at unless it’s at the top.”

His next fight will be about February next year as he continues to focus on his full time job and his university studies.
