A “vicious” attack by a Nambour woman left a stranger with blood pouring from her nose and mouth, a court has heard.

Simona Helen Kei, 43, was responsible for randomly belting the 45-year-old woman while she was walking home from grocery shopping in Nambour.

Kei had her suspended sentence activated after she pleaded guilty to one count of public nuisance in Maroochydore District Court on May 10, 2022.

Police prosecutor Nick Nitschke said officers were patrolling in Nambour on October 21, 2021, near the hospital when they were flagged down by pedestrians.

“Police observed a woman who had blood coming from her nose and mouth,” Sergeant Nitschke said.

The 45-year-old woman stated she was approached by Kei who abused and then “king hit” her with a closed fist, causing her to fall to the ground.

Sergeant Nitschke told the court Kei was on a suspended sentence for serious assault when she coward punched the stranger.

The serious assault occurred in October, 2020 when she was yelling and screaming at residents in a Caloundra West street before biting a police officer on the arm.

Solicitor Chantelle Allen said her client was born in New Zealand and had previously worked in factories and food banks.

“In around late-2020 her life began to spiral, she was in an abusive relationship and was drinking heavily,” Ms Allen said.

Ms Allen said Kei had suffered from poor mental health due to her traumatic childhood and was undergoing counselling.

The court heard Kei was also facing charges of grievous bodily harm and assault occasioning bodily harm charges, for which she has not yet entered pleas.

Magistrate Matthew McLaughlin described the offence as “abhorrent”, “disgraceful” and “vicious” while sentencing the 43-year-old.

“It’s at the very top of public nuisance, it is gratuitous violence on a stranger,” Mr McLaughlin said.

“For no apparent reason you attacked this person without even speaking to them.”

Mr McLaughlin activated Kei’s suspended sentence of 12 months’ prison and also imposed three months’ prison for the new offence that will be served concurrently.

Kei will be released on parole on July 10, 2022.
