SHOWERS are set to linger this afternoon but the damaging storms that nailed parts of the Sunshine Coast hinterland yesterday weren't expected to return.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster David Crock said thunderstorms would remain west of Kingaroy, but showers capable of delivering about 10mm of rain would continue.

Those intermittent falls were being driven by the southeasterly winds coming from the ocean.

He expected not much more than 10-12mm of rain to fall on the coastal fringes today.

The temperature was set to stay about 25C today and only increase slightly until Wednesday, when the mercury would once again climb above 30C.

He said the winds would gradually ease off before shifting northerly from Tuesday or Wednesday.

Bellbird Creek in Kenilworth copped 58mm between 3pm-6pm yesterday during intense storms that delivered some hail and destructive winds that ripped down trees and powerlines in Gympie.

Dagun Pocket recorded 44mm of rain while Maleny (34mm), Mapleton (27mm) and Double Island Point (33mm) all received relatively heavy falls over a short time period.
