Shark activity reported across coast after Maroochydore catch

A bull shark was reportedly caught and released on Saturday at the Maroochydore river mouth, according to a post on the shark reporting platform, Dorsal Watch.

The report, shared by a user named ‘Mike,’ described how the 1.7 metre shark was pulled up after larger fish had been tugging their lines.

“Caught on fishing rods at the Maroochydore river mouth, may be bigger bullies around, as we got hits and runs from way bigger fish,” Mike wrote, sharing a photo of the shark.

The post quickly gained attention on the Dorsal Watch Queensland Facebook page, prompting others to share their own sightings and experiences.

Alexander Manton commented on the page, saying he saw a shark while paddle boarding near the river mouth.

“I saw one in the water right there and then saw one jump right in front of me while I was on my paddle board. Scared the S out of me,” he said.

Jess Prendergast also shared two separate shark sightings over the weekend.

“Out on the jetski today, hubby saw a dorsal fin near the entrance to Spinnaker Sound, Sandstone Point, and I saw a dorsal fin in front of me outside of Woorim Beach, down near the off-leash dog section. Also saw dolphins, but these were definitely sharks,” she wrote.

Ben Harvey noted there were “lots of bait fish” in the water near the beach on Saturday.

“Wasn’t going in past the knees,” Mr Harvey said.
