A much-loved diver and army veteran who died in an offshore tragedy is being remembered as a “wonderful man” as his family face an agonising wait to discover the cause of his shocking death.

Scott Raymond Sewell, 48, died while scuba diving off the Mooloolaba coastline at 1.26pm on Sunday.

Mr Sewell’s wife Leanne described her husband as an “absolutely wonderful man”.

“He would give anyone the shirt off his back,” she said.

“He was so so kind.”

Mrs Sewell described her husband’s death as a “massive shock” and said the couple were due to celebrate the birth of their grandchild in a week.

A Queensland police spokesman said bystanders tried to resuscitate the South East Nanango man while driving him ashore where emergency services were waiting at a location off Parkyn Pde, Mooloolaba.

A Queensland Ambulance spokeswoman said the man, who was in a critical condition while being brought ashore, was assessed by several ambulance crews.

But sadly police confirmed he couldn’t be saved and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mrs Sewell said her family was still unsure about the cause of death and are waiting for an autopsy.

Sunreef operations manager John Fell confirmed the company’s crew was involved in the incident.

“It’s just such a tragic thing to happen and for the immediate family and the crew directly involved it’s still very fresh,” he said.

He said Sunreef was unable to provide any further details surrounding the event but said his thoughts were with all parties involved.

“The man’s immediate family and all the crew involved are in our hearts and minds,” he said.

Mrs Sewell said her husband was a Department of Veteran Affairs Army veteran and spent his time volunteering at Kingaroy’s RSPCA.

“He loved it,” she said.

Mr Sewell was a proud dad of four and "adored" his grandchildren Cooper and Skylar.
