OPPORTUNITIES for young women in sport are growing thanks to the Mountain Creek Juniors Australian Football Club.

The club ran a program in conjunction with Mountain Creek State High School to build interest in AFL in the Murgon area amongst girls, particularly those of Indigenous heritage.

The program saw 25 girls from Murgon State High School travel to the Coast to participate in AFL skills sessions and healthy living workshops.

Mountain Creek Juniors Australian Football Club President Steve Curnow said his club "wants to be apart of the community and help grow AFL” because they're "extremely passionate about it”.

Mr Curnow believes there is a strong connection between AFL and Indigenous Australians and aimed to develop the support in the Murgon area.

A donation of AFL equipment was provided to Murgon school in order to get them off the ground, Mr Curnow said.

"Hopefully if we give them some resources like jumpers and footballs, they could start up their own league.”

Murgon State High School student Audrey Miller said the program was a great idea as there are a lack of sport opportunities in her area.

"We're very honoured to come here and play with them, it's really exciting for us,” she said.

The focus on Indigenous culture was important to Audrey, as she believed the program "brings a lot of people together”.

The program was possible due to a $10,000 grant from the Australian Sports Foundation.
