The fast and fit will sweat it out for an epic endurance test as the Ironman 70.3 Sunshine Coast gets under way.

About 1500 athletes from 18 to 80 years old will take part, with an elite cast of professionals also in the mix.

The event will push competitors across a 1.9km swim in Mooloolaba bay, a two-lap 90km ride up to Coolum and a 21.1km run through Alexandra Headland, Maroochydore and Mooloolaba.

Ironman Group Oceania regional director Rob Stalling said he was excited for a solid turnout to take on the course.

“Border and travel restrictions has meant that the event will primarily feature Queensland-based athletes, but we’re thrilled with the response from those who can make it to the Sunshine Coast,” he said.

“Last year this event was the first of its kind to take place in Queensland following the declaration of the Covid-19 pandemic and we thank the local community for their support in making it a great success.

“This year there will be plenty of opportunity for people to get out and about to cheer on their family and friends taking part. We do ask that those attending the event abide by the latest public health directions from Queensland Health.”

The event will have a number of Covid Safe measures in place, following on from the successful running of last year’s race.

These include increased cleaning, hygiene measures, regular washing of hands and the availability of hand sanitiser.

A Sunshine Coast Sport and Lifestyle Expo will run from Friday to Sunday at the multistorey carpark at the Wharf, with racing action starting early on Sunday.

The pro male race kicks off at 6am, with the pro women and paratriathletes starting just minutes later.

The age group race will have rolling starts from 6.05am.

The first male finisher is expected to cross the line at Beach Terrace, Mooloolaba, at about 9.40am with the first female athlete soon after at about 10am.

Changed traffic conditions will be in place along the Sunshine Motorway, across Alexandra Headland and at Mooloolaba from 4am Friday until 5pm on Sunday.
