The 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games will provide the Sunshine Coast a possible housing solution, with the Queensland Premier revealing 350 permanent homes will be built as part of the Games infrastructure.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and the Olympic Games Committee are touring the Sunshine Coast to discuss infrastructure needs.

Part of the legacy development plans for the region include building a satellite athletes village in the Maroochydore City Centre, which is being developed by the Walker Cooperation.

Speaking at a business breakfast in Caloundra on Thursday, Ms Palaszczuk said housing was a key factor in planning for the Olympics and Paralympics.

Ms Palaszczuk said the satellite village will result in 350 permanent homes remaining on the Sunshine Coast after the athletes village is no longer needed.

“It will be our legacy beyond the Games but we are working with the developers and we’re looking at working with councils about how we can get online more affordable options for housing which I think is key,” she said.

“What we saw with the example at the Commonwealth Games where we built the Games village is what we built is now used for a whole range of accommodation.”

Also speaking at the business breakfast, Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson said council was working with the Games Committee to ensure investment and development was appropriate for the region.

Mr Jamieson said the region would need to have at least 10 new hotels built to accommodate those attending the Games.

“There’s some approvals underway already but we would need to cater for a significant number of international guests coming to the Sunshine Coast and wanting to use the world class hotels, that’ll create a range of opportunities,” he said.

Initial plans revealed 1374 beds would be required and include a mix of residential housing and commercial facilities.

The event will put the Sunshine Coast on the world stage, as it plays a key role by hosting some of the cycling, athletics and sailing events.

Ms Palaszczuk said the government would be hosting a housing summit in October to discuss the “big challenges ahead” and hoped Sunshine Coast representatives could share their thoughts.

“90,000 people have moved to Queensland in the last year, almost double of what you’ve seen moving to the other states,” she said.

“You’ve got that, you’ve got investors buying up properties or people wanting to move in which is forcing people to move out.”

Ms Palaszczuk said national cabinet will also discuss the housing crisis in December, with housing ministers expected to convene the meeting.
