Queensland Day: Weather bureau forecasts low temperatures after mild weekend

Temperatures are expected to drop and, depending on the timing of the cold snap, some parts of Queensland could even see snow, says the weather bureau.

The Sunshine State will live up to its name to celebrate the birthday of Queensland.

This weekend Queensland Day, which celebrates the separation from NSW, will be celebrated across the state.

But forecasters are warning people to enjoy the mild conditions, with temperatures expected to hit single figures after sunset.

With it may even come the rare phenomenon of snow in Queensland.

The weather bureau's Adam Blazak said the timing of the cold snap was crucial to whether or not snow would fall in the Granite Belt.

"It would be less than a 10 per cent chance, but that's enough for us to keep an eye on it," he said.

"If that really cold air does push over the Granite Belt, than we could see that opportunity (for snow) still but the latest modelling has it further west, like Thargomindah.

"I wouldn't expect to see snow that far west, it's going to be too dry out there."

Based on current models, Stanthorpe is forecast to be rainy with a minimum of 7C on Wednesday, but that could plummet below zero if the cold air changes direction slightly.

The mercury will drop to 9C overnight over the weekend in Brisbane, then 13C on Tuesday.

But Thursday will bring ice conditions, with temperatures expected to dip below average to 6C in Brisbane.
