Sunshine Coast police have ramped up their traffic checkpoints with more than 250 motorists stopped for possible Covid-19 breaches.

District officer Superintendent Craig Hawkins said 273 motorists were stopped on Wednesday.

He said police would be out in force for the remainder of the eight-day lockdown.

Police handed out 77 masks to the motorists but did not issue any fines.

Superintendent Hawkins said the RBT-style operations would pop up throughout the district anywhere, anytime.

“They are very flexible and can be dismantled and pop up easily,” Superintendent Hawkins said.

“Our intent is to protect the Sunshine Coast from the virus and from extending the lockdown.”

Superintendent Hawkins said two men were issued with infringement notices for Covid-19 breaches on Wednesday.

A Coolum Beach man refused to provide personal details to police and a Glass House Mountains man was found to have left home for non-essential travel.

Both were issued fines of $1378.

A Mount Coolum woman, 20, was also given a $1378 fine when stopped by Moreton Bay police while travelling to Toowoomba to swap over a car.

A Sunshine Beach man, 34, was charged after allegedly removing a Covid-19 signage from a playground at Sunrise Beach.

Police allege the man recorded himself removing the signage and placing it in a bin.

The man is due to front the Noosa Magistrates Court on August 24.

Superintendent Hawkins said the fines were lower than the totals issued on Monday and Tuesday.

“I am pleased with the reduced amount of movement,” he said.

“But we must remain vigilant.”
