A woman who kicked, punched and slapped a staff member after refusing to check in at a Sunshine Coast pub said she was in the midst of a “horribly embarrassing bender”.

Catherine Jane Gale, 44, became agitated about having to complete a Covid check in and lashed out at Pub Mooloolaba staff on Boxing Day last year.

On New Year’s Day Gale also kicked a police officer in the groin after being arrested for carrying a knife in public.

When she refused to check in at Pub Mooloolaba, staff members called over a duty manager who “received a barrage of foul language” from Gale.

The manager was trying to calm her down when Gale punched her in the head and began kicking her feet.

Other staff members jumped in to remove Gale from the pub but she managed to turn and slap the manager in the face before pushing over a computer.

Police prosecutor Stu Lydford said on New Year’s Day police received a call from a person who said they had been “slashed” with a knife at Mooloolaba.

Sergeant Lydford said the person told police “Cathy” did it.

They then described Gale to officers, who later found her in Mooloolaba with a knife with a 7cm blade in her backpack.

The court heard Gale told police she carried the kitchen knife for protection as she got “scared” when going out at night.

Gale was placed in the back of a police van but lashed out and kicked an officer in the groin.

She was taken to the watch house and later released.

Sergeant Lydford said no complaint was made or charges laid over the knife attack.

Gale faced Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Monday and pleaded guilty to assaulting a police officer, common assault, possessing a knife in a public place, create a disturbance in a licenced premise and wilful damage.

Duty lawyer Rachel Holland told the court Gale said she had been in the midst of a “horribly embarrassing bender” at the time of the offences.

She said the single mother had been hospitalised before and after the offences and had previously been diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder after she found her partner deceased.

Ms Holland said Gale received monthly injections as part of her mental health treatment.

She said Gale knew she could not drink while on the injections, and that she had not touched alcohol since the offences.

She said Gales was remorseful and wanted to extend her apologies to the victims.

Magistrate Rod Madsen sentenced Gale to 12 months probation and ordered her to pay the $130.30 offender levy to the court.

She was ordered to forfeit the knife.
