A Maryborough man has been jailed for his abhorrent attack on a woman where he pulled her hair and threw her into a door, breaking her collarbone before she fled.

Sean Maxwell Warren was able to leave Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Tuesday, August 17, 2022 on immediate parole after pleading guilty to assault and wilful damage.

The court was told the incident unfolded at an address in Marcoola on October 2, 2022 after the victim threw a cup of water on the 53-year-old Maryborough man.

Police prosecutor Brendan Newman said Warren threatened to kill the victim if she did it again.

The woman went to fill her cup of water before Warren stormed at her, forcing her to throw the cup at him to try and escape.

Sergeant Newman said Warren grabbed the victim’s hair and pulled her backwards before he threw her into the door frame, breaking her collarbone.

Warren then grabbed a hair dryer and menacingly held an extension cord in his hand.

The court heard the 53-year-old, in a fit of rage, grabbed a knife after this and stabbed a door in a separate part of the apartment multiple times.

Sergeant Newman said the victim was able to escape but due to her serious injury she was forced to come back to retrieve her phone.

Warren was still at the address and called an ambulance for the victim before eventually driving her to hospital.

The court was told the victim had ongoing physical suffering since the attack and was being treated by an orthopaedic surgeon.

She was also suffering from emotional distress, insomnia and was “trapped in a nightmare she can’t wake up from”.

Defence lawyer Jacob Pruden said Warren’s assault was in the “heat of the moment” and questioned the prosecution’s submission that it was a protracted event, estimating it happened over 30 seconds.

“It could’ve felt like an eternity to someone,” Magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist said.

Mr Pruden said it was a “moment of madness” for Warren, but he had since written a letter of apology to the victim and engaged in rehabilitation.

Warren pleaded guilty to assault and wilful damage and was sentenced to 18 months’ jail but was released on immediate parole.

“You wouldn’t have gone very well in Brisbane Men’s Correctional Facility,” Mr Stjernqvist said to Warren.

A conviction was recorded.
