A Dicky Beach retail worker who stomped on the skull of an unconscious man in Maroochydore’s Safe Night Precinct did so while onlookers watched on.

Punters along Duporth Ave on March 18, 2022 watched on as Samuel David Wright, 29, and his co-accused attacked a man while he lay unconscious on the ground.

Maroochydore Magistrates Court heard when police arrived about 11.25pm they saw a group of eight men involved in a violent street fight.

Police prosecutor David Hoffmann said Wright and the co-accused chased and knocked a man down.

Senior Constable Hoffmann said as the victim lay face down on the concrete unconscious the co-accused knelt on his torso and rained blows to his head.

Simultaneously Wright stomped on the unconscious man’s skull while he lay defenceless on the footpath, the court heard.

Police pepper sprayed both Wright and the co-accused to stop the melee before the victim was taken to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

Defence lawyer Chelsea Emery said the victim suffered cuts to the face but wasn’t more seriously injured due to good luck.

Ms Emery said the single father of two “rarely goes out” and had been waiting with friends to be picked up when one of them was punched.

She told the court they weren’t sure who threw the punch but a consensual fight ensued as punters egged them on.

Ms Emery said Wright suffered burns to his skin and chest pains after being pepper sprayed twice by police.

The court heard the 29-year-old had taken on a national role with a retail company after moving to Queensland in 2014.

Magistrate Rod Madsen said Wright put the public in terror and labelled it as a “vicious stomping”.

Wright pleaded guilty to affray and was fined $1000.

He was ordered to commit 40 hours’ community service, with no conviction recorded.
