A Sunshine Coast nurse has faced court after she was busted impersonating doctors and using fake names in order to get scripts for oxycodone and other prescription drugs.
Morgan Reanna Ainsworth, 31, faced the Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Tuesday where she pleaded guilty to 11 charges of fraud and 10 attempted fraud over a four-month period.
Police prosecutor Lee Allan told the court Ainsworth used her knowledge as a registered nurse to impersonate doctors in order to get scripts for prescription drugs.
“The defendant would attend seven different pharmacies after calling them and pretending to be one of five different doctors to obtain prescriptions for different drugs including oxycodone,” Senior Constable Allan said.
“On some occasions she would use a fake name and on others she would use her own name to receive the drugs.
“She got drugs on six of nine occasions during that period of offending.”
Constable Allan told the court Ainsworth then began booking phone consultations under her sister’s name while on bail for the first fraud offences.
The sister is not accused of any wrongdoing.
“While she was on bail she commits the next series of offences when she conducted telehealth appointments under her sister’s name, and attempted and succeeded in getting scripts for similar types of drugs,” Constable Allan said.
“The offending is not unsophisticated given she used her knowledge of being employed as a nurse and the medical processes.”
Defence solicitor Chantelle Allen told the court the mother-of-one suffered from chronic back pain following a car accident in 2021 and had become addicted to prescription pain medication.
“It is not just the chronic back pain that's referred to in the facts, it’s other conditions of mental health including depression and OCD, as well as endometriosis which she has had multiple surgeries for,” Ms Allen said.
“The offending occurs in the context of chronic pain and is what I would describe as a debilitating substance abuse issue.”
Ms Allen said Ainsworth was currently suspended from her job as a nurse.
Magistrate Matthew Mclaughlin sentenced Ainsworth to one year of probation.
No conviction was recorded.
