A Coolum Beach man accused of killing a toddler in a devastating crash on the Sunshine Mwy has been warned his case can’t be put “on hold” because of his financial situation.

Micah Pesla Djordjevic, 37, is charged with two counts of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death or grievous bodily harm, drug driving and failing to restrain a child under four over a crash that killed three-year-old Koa Esquivel on May 30.

Police allege Mr Djordjevic was driving a silver Mitsubishi Pajero southbound near Coolum-Yandina Rd roundabout about 2.15pm when it collided with a Mazda CX-9 heading north.

Koa, who is understood to have been Mr Djordjevic’s nephew, suffered critical injuries in the crash and died at Sunshine Coast University Hospital the following day.

The 38-year-old woman driving the Mazda and a 12-year-old female passenger suffered serious injuries and were discharged from hospital several weeks after the crash, while a four-year-old boy also suffered minor injuries.

Court documents revealed Mr Djordjevic allegedly failed to ensure Koa was restrained properly in the back seat.

The 37-year-old appeared in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Friday October 21, represented by duty lawyer Liesel Rogan.

Mr Djordjevic told the court he was still “trying to get the money together” to pay for his lawyer and was waiting for a buyer for property.

Magistrate Matthew McLaughlin told the Coolum Beach man the court couldn’t put the charges while he sorted the issues.

The matter was adjourned to December 2.
