A Warana man has been given more jail time for his brutal assaults on a woman who he strangled, kicked and threw her into a cabinet.
The vile domestic violence assaults committed by Mereki Jarmr Doyle were aired in Maroochydore Magistrates Court this week, which confirmed he will stay behind bars for at least another five months.
The 22-year-old faced more than a dozen charges which stemmed from over a six-week period between October 16 and November 28 last year.
Magistrate Chris Callaghan said the height of Doyle’s crimes was on October 16, where he turned up to a woman’s home and inflicted a series of assaults upon her.
The court heard the Warana man grabbed the woman by the arms and threw her to the ground where she collided with the side of a cabinet.
Police prosecutor Brendan Newman said Doyle pulled the woman by the hair, kicked her in the ribs while she was on the ground and punched her in the face.
She was dragged along the hallway before he placed his knees on her chest and pinned her.
Doyle then placed his hands around her throat and squeezed tightly for about a minute.
Sergeant Newman said the victim felt like she couldn’t breathe and experienced a loss of vision.
Mr Callaghan said the victim told Doyle he was strangling her and he replied “I don’t give a f--k, shut the f--k up,” and “be quiet”.
The magistrate said he was not charged with choking by police but rather assault occasioning bodily harm.
The court heard among Doyle’s crimes was the 22-year-old threatening to damage her home, wrecking property including a roller door and an iPad and stealing a scooter and alcohol.
The police prosecutor said he spoke to the victim on Wednesday who stated she still received flashbacks in her own home of the terrifying incident and even installed cameras because of what happened.
She said her throat and entire body hurt for a long period after the attacks, suffered from a lack of sleep and was now hypervigilant.
Defence lawyer Rod Morgan said Doyle was making progress on parole before the assaults however his life fell apart due to losing contact with his dad which led to him turning to booze and abusing meth. This was also partnered with the Warana man falling into a jealous rage.
Mr Morgan said the Warana man however completed programs to address domestic violence.
Mr Callaghan said Doyle was on parole at the time of the offence, which led to him being taken into custody on November 28 last year where he spent three months on remand before his sentence on Wednesday.
He pleaded guilty to multiple charges including three counts of domestic violence assault, two of threatening violence and two of wilful damage.
Doyle was jailed for two years, which was cumulative on another sentence he was serving.
Mr Callaghan said the 22-year-old would be eligible to apply for parole on August 26.
